Scapegrace
Scapegrace is a New Zealand distillery. In 2012, two brothers-in-law Mark Neill and Daniel McLaughlin started making a gin. In 2018, Scapegrace Gold won the World's Best Gin Award at the International Spirits Awards.
Produced in a 19th century John Dore copper pot still with 12 botanicals; juniper, coriander, nutmeg, cardamom, lemon and orange rind, cinnamon, cassia, orris and angelica, clove and licorice. The bottles are inspired by the classic old Dutch 'jenever' bottle.
Scapegrace is another word for rogue in case you were wondering..
Scapegrace Black
With the “All Blacks” known around the world for their rugby prowess, it should come as no surprise that Scapegrace launched a black bottle, which contained an all-black gin! A very intriguing expression from New Zealand. The color comes from its botanicals, including aronia berries, saffron, pineapple and sweet potatoes. And the cool thing: the black gin turns pink when tonic is added!
Smell: Surprisingly fruity, pineapple and lemon first. Slowly builds up to spicy juniper.
Taste: Peppery and viscous, a small hint of mint. Tropical fruit along with herbs.
Finish: Dill, red currant, gin and grass clippings.
Signature drink: Pour the Scapegrace Black Dry Gin and Tonic Water into an ice cube glass and garnish with 2 slices of granny smith apple. Can you already see the pink color appearing?!
Scapegrace Classic
Scapegrace Classic Gin is a Premium Dry Gin from New Zealand, produced in a 19th century John Dore copper pot still. The recipe for this gin has chosen a selection of 12 plant botanicals: juniper, coriander, nutmeg, cardamom, lemon peel, orange peel, carrot extract, cinnamon, cassia cinnamon, angelica, clove and licorice.
This Scapegrace Classic Gin comes in a classic gin bottle, a small nod to the drink's long and storied history; it's a modern take on the original gin bottles from over 200 years ago.
Smell: Clear citrus balanced with cinnamon and pine.
Taste: Genever takes the upper hand, very oily. Cardamom, clove and cinnamon keep this gin nice and spicy.
Finish: Lingering lemon and juniper, plus a hint of licorice.
Signature drink: Because this gin is very smooth, it can easily be drunk pure. But it's also possible with a neutral tonic water, which increases the spice in the gin, or a Pink Grapefruit Tonic, which further brings out the citrus side of the gin. At least you grab a large glass filled with ice and pour 50 ml of gin over it. Then slowly add 150 ml of tonic and stir gently. Garnish with a slice of grapefruit. Salud!
Scapegrace Gold
A 13th ingredient has been added to the Navy strength variant of Scapegrace; Scapegrace Gold Gin, namely mandarin peel. The higher strength really lets the flavours come through, and this is the perfect friction between complexity and balance. The aroma of this gin is really intriguing. It's well-rounded with a nutty touch and has a mixture of nutmeg spices and an earthy quality of clove. These give an almost
coffee-like edge. There is also a clear overlying orange aroma. When it comes to taste, Cassia and Iris are central, but these are accompanied by citrus notes, with lime in particular coming out surprisingly. The juniper and fennel play a supporting role in this gin, along with a hint of coriander spice. It ends strongly flowered, with orris and angelica. Fun fact: this gin has been nominated as the best gin in the world in 2018.
Smell: Nutty, round. A mix of nutmeg and cloves gives it almost a coffee feeling! Fresh orange and tangerine.
Taste: Cassia and orris root are protagonists, along with lime, juniper and fennel, with a core of spicy coriander.
Finish: Orris and angelica in the aftertaste
Signature drink: Although it is a strong gin, it is very smooth and can be tasted pure over lots of ice. But if you want a longer, more refreshing drink, try it in the mix with tonic. Pour 40 ml of gin into a large glass filled with ice and top up with 150 ml of Tonic Water. Simply garnish with a slice of lime. And enjoy!
